Chapter Twelve: Tell Me When

Riding over to Stephano’s estate in his Alfa Romeo was the most fun I had experienced in a long time. He turned the radio onto an all oldies, Italian station. We both sang That’s Amore by Dean Martin at the top of our lungs. Then Volare…whoa oh! We were breathless with laughter. But when a very old song came on, we both quieted down and our laughter faded away.

Kissing me, you will say, "We will never leave each other…"

Now, it doesn't make sense to me,

My life without you,

Tell me when you're coming,

Tell me when, when, when, (Dimmi quando, quando, quando)

I always felt sad whenever I heard it in the past. I never understood why as it was a true love song.

We were silent for a few minutes and then Stephano spoke, “This is a song I listened to often…” His voice faded away.

“When?” I asked him curiously as he seemed to be affected by the song as I had.

“Before I lost my first love,” he explained. “It then became a sad song for me.”

I slowly shook my head. “I always felt sad too, whenever I heard it. I admit though that I have no idea why.”

He reached over and patted my hand. “Often, music can carry a person back to a feeling they once had. Even if years have gone by and perhaps they do not remember the event it connects with.”

I smiled as I gave him a wink. “That is very deep, Stephano.”

He chuckled and placed his hand back on the wheel. “I can be deep when I need to be.”

I grinned at him then looked back at the road. “When I first heard it, I was maybe twenty? I cried and cried. I felt stupid doing that over a song and not even knowing why. Of course, living in Italy it played all the time, even though it was old even then.”

“Si, Italians are sentimental people. When I was there and young, I never understood their attachments to things. Songs, stars, movies…And of course, food.” He laughed. “Then when I came here, I actually missed that. Here, it is all fast and everything changes in a second. Cars, songs, food and life in general.” Now, he scoffed. “Accidenti…Damn, look at me, I sound like my father.”

“When I visited here as a tourist, I did notice the difference between Italian-life and American-life.” I giggled. “But yes, I get it, you and I aren’t teens anymore, you know? When we go on our five-in-one tour, maybe we can dress up like we’re cool?”

He nodded. “I’m not sure about cool, but I will be in a disguise for sure.”

I looked over at him. “Disguise?”

“Si, I was lucky I got to sneak out today without my bodyguards. And I can’t take those two on a tour bus.” He chuckled. “Even if it would be hilarious. Big Rocky and an even bigger Tito. They would never fit in those bus seats.”

“Tito and Rocky?”

He nodded. “My personal security is my nephews and they are dead serious about their jobs.
